Umrah can be performed at any time of year — unlike Hajj, which is restricted to a specific period on the Islamic calendar. But the time you choose has a big impact on your experience: the crowds you will face, the weather in the holy cities, the prices you will pay, and the spiritual atmosphere surrounding your journey. Here is a practical guide for pilgrims departing from the United States.
The Spiritual Peak: Ramadan
Performing Umrah during Ramadan is widely considered the most spiritually rewarding time. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said that Umrah in Ramadan equals Hajj in reward. The holy cities are alive with collective worship — millions of Muslims fast together, pray Taraweeh, and immerse themselves in the remembrance of Allah.
For 2026, Ramadan falls approximately in late February through late March. This is also one of the busiest and most expensive times to travel. Flights sell out months in advance, hotels near the Haram reach their highest rates, and crowds in Makkah are at their peak — especially in the last 10 days. If you plan to go during Ramadan, book 4–6 months ahead.
The Practical Choice: October and November
For many US-based pilgrims, October is one of the best practical months to perform Umrah. The scorching summer heat has passed, crowds are significantly lighter than Ramadan, and prices are more reasonable. The weather in Makkah in October averages around 90°F (32°C) — still warm, but manageable compared to the 110°F+ days of summer.
Early November also works well before the Thanksgiving holiday rush begins. Our November Thanksgiving package — departing November 19 — allows pilgrims to make use of the long Thanksgiving break while simultaneously performing one of the most meaningful acts of worship.
Budget-Friendly Option: June, July, and August
If budget is your primary concern, the summer months often offer lower package prices — particularly for flights. However, the trade-off is significant: Makkah and Madinah in July and August regularly exceed 110°F (43°C). The Haram itself is air-conditioned, but walking between the mosque and your hotel, and performing Tawaf in the open courtyards, can be physically demanding.
If you choose summer, prioritize a hotel within very close walking distance of Masjid al-Haram — ideally in the Abraj Al Bait complex — to minimize outdoor exposure. Stay hydrated, travel with elderly family members with extra care, and plan most outdoor activities for the cooler early morning and nighttime hours.

What About Hajj Season?
Umrah cannot be performed during the days of Hajj (the 8th–13th of Dhul Hijjah on the Islamic calendar). If you are planning a trip close to the Hajj period, check the exact dates for that year. Non-Hajj pilgrims are restricted from certain areas during Hajj days for safety and logistical reasons.
Best Time for Families with Children
Families traveling with young children often do best in October or November, when the weather is milder and schools in the US tend to have breaks (fall break, Thanksgiving). The lighter crowds also make it easier to move around with children. If budget allows, December is another good window — mild weather, manageable crowds, and the holiday break aligns well.
Our Recommendation
If spiritual experience is your priority and you can handle the crowds and cost, go during the last 10 days of Ramadan. If you want the best balance of comfort, price, and spiritual atmosphere with manageable crowds, October is our top recommendation for pilgrims from the USA. And if your budget is the primary constraint, June or August can work — just plan your hotel location and daily schedule carefully to manage the heat.
