Our whole experience to Mecca and Medina was phenomenal and it was because of Dar El Mecca Travel. From the beginning to end everything was organized, booked prior to our arrival, and what was promised that was delivered. All the vendors and team members that helped with the booking, who took us to all the zaiyrats were very knowledgeable and respectful that added to our experience as well. Every dollar spent was well worth it. I highly recommend Dar El Mecca Travel and encourage everyone to use them for umrah, hajj, or any kind of travel that is of interest.

What is Hajj? Understanding the Sacred Pilgrimage and Its Rituals

Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam, mandating every Muslim who is physically and financially capable to undertake this pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime. It occurs annually during the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijjah, drawing millions of Muslims to the holy city of Makkah to perform a series of deeply spiritual rituals.

Step-by-Step Guide to the Hajj Rituals

1. Intention and Ihram
  • Intention (Niyyah): Before embarking on the journey, pilgrims make a sincere intention to perform Hajj, signifying their devotion and readiness to undertake the pilgrimage.
  • Entering Ihram: Pilgrims enter a state of spiritual purity called Ihram at designated points known as Miqat. Men wear two unstitched white garments, while women wear modest clothing that fulfills Islamic guidelines. This state prohibits certain actions, symbolizing unity and humility before Allah.
  • Tawaf: Upon reaching Makkah, pilgrims perform Tawaf, which involves circling the Kaaba seven times in a counter-clockwise direction, expressing the centrality of Allah in their lives.
  • Sa’i: After Tawaf, pilgrims walk seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah, reenacting Hagar’s (Hajrah’s) search for water for her son, Ismail. This ritual signifies patience and trust in Allah’s provision.
  • Mina: On the 8th of Dhul-Hijjah, pilgrims travel to Mina, a tent city approximately 8 kilometers from Makkah. Here, they spend the day and night in prayer and contemplation, performing the five daily prayers.
  • Arafat: On the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah, pilgrims proceed to the plains of Arafat. Standing at Arafat, known as Wuquf, is the pinnacle of Hajj, where pilgrims engage in deep prayer and supplication, seeking Allah’s mercy and forgiveness.
  • Muzdalifah: After sunset on the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah, pilgrims move to Muzdalifah, an open area between Arafat and Mina. Here, they perform Maghrib and Isha prayers, rest under the open sky, and gather pebbles for the next day’s ritual of the stoning of the Devil (Shaytan).
  • Ramy al-Jamarat: On the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah, pilgrims return to Mina to perform the symbolic stoning of the devil by throwing seven pebbles at the largest pillar, Jamrat al-Aqabah. This act commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s rejection of Satan’s temptation.
  • Qurbani: Following the stoning, pilgrims perform the sacrifice of an animal (such as a sheep, goat, or cow), honoring Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah. This rite also coincides with the global Islamic festival of Eid al-Adha.
  • Halq/Taqsir: Male pilgrims either shave their heads (Halq) or trim their hair (Taqsir), while female pilgrims cut a small portion of their hair, symbolizing purification and renewal.
  • Tawaf al-Ifadah: Pilgrims return to the Kaaba to perform another Tawaf, known as Tawaf al-Ifadah, signifying their renewed commitment to Allah following the core rituals of Hajj.
  • Continued Stoning: Over the next two or three days (11th to 13th of Dhul-Hijjah), pilgrims continue the stoning ritual at all three pillars (Jamarat), each day throwing seven pebbles at each pillar, reaffirming their rejection of evil.
  • Tawaf al-Wada: Before leaving Makkah, pilgrims perform a final circumambulation of the Kaaba, known as the Farewell Tawaf, bidding farewell to the holy city and concluding their Hajj journey.
